Shiras Moose

The Shiras moose is the smallest of all the moose, but a dandy species to hunt.  Getting a tag in Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, can be difficult, and most states work from a preference point situation.  You apply, get preference points and the more points you have the better your chances of getting drawn.  In Utah the landowners who have moose on their property, can qualify for Landowners Tags.  Each big ranch might only get a few tags each year and they can either use them or sell them.  In September 2002, I went on a once-in-a-lifetime Shiras moose hunt with Craig Mitton from Ogden, Utah.  I bought a Landowner Tag with Craig being the middle man for me.  He knew the ranch and rancher very well and bought tags there every year.  They are quite expensive, so this was a big deal for me.  But I saved and just decided to go for it.  Craig put me up in his mountain log house, his wife cooked great meals, and Craig had the area well scouted.  It is a spot and stalk hunt and I highly recommend Craig to you.  I got lucky and got a super bull early in the bowhunt.  Craig also takes hunters on mule deer and billy goat  hunts.
