Whitetailed Deer - Iowa, Montana, Alberta, and Coues deer in Mexico

I’ve had the opportunity to bowhunt for whitetails in many states.

I’ve hunted 3 times in Montana on a property that is leased, and partly owned, by Nickie Roth. Each time I’ve had shooting opportunities at Pope and Young bucks, and took my first P&Y buck there. You will see a lot of bucks in the 125-135 range. And there is the occasional buster as well. A great area along the Missouri river in eastern Montana near the North Dakota border.

The fall of 2002 I bowhunted the rut with Kevin Wilson just outside the bow zone in Edmonton, Alberta.  This next fall I'm going to bowhunt with Kevin again.  Kevin is a bowhunter and he has personally taken some huge bucks the past several years.  His area is very close to where the new world record Zandt buck was killed.  He only takes a small number of bowhunters each fall, and the lodging and food are very good.   I am impressed with Kevin and the bucks he has in his area.  You will not see a lot of deer, but man, there are some monster bucks there.

Coues deer are a very small deer found in southern Arizona and Mexico and they have the reputation of being the most difficult species to bowhunt on the North American continent. In 2005 I went on a super Coues deer hunt in the Sonora region of old Mexico with Enrique Molina owner of the 12,000 acre Chairababi and El Vergel Ranches. Both are bow only ranches. I hunted t he Chairababi which is 12,000 acres. The accommodations are very good, and the Coues hunting fantastic. Enrique is also a guide and knows bowhunting. The key is the weather. If it is dry (and it was very dry when I was there.......no rain since August), then they come to water. Wet weather and you have to stalk them......possible, but very difficult. Three of us got three record-book bucks the first two days of a 6 day bowhunt. You fly into Tuscon and Enrique meets you there, and transports you to the ranch. It's about a 3 hour drive. Good accomodations, good food, great Coues. A super experience. If you want a Coues deer, this is the place.

Iowa buck taken in 1998.
